CHRIST IN THE OLD TESTAMENT: A New Sunday School Class!

SUNDAY | JANUARY 8

Next Sunday, we will begin a new Sunday School series focused on one of the most important questions a Christian can ask: How does the Old Testament relate to Jesus Christ?

Many Christians know that the Old Testament somehow “points to Jesus,” but they are often unsure how that actually works. Is Christ merely predicted in a handful of prophecies, or is He more deeply woven into the fabric of the Old Covenant? How should we read narratives, laws, sacrifices, and symbols that seem so distant from our lives today? And how did Jesus Himself expect His disciples to understand the Scriptures?

This class is designed to answer those questions carefully, biblically, and clearly.

Throughout this series, we will explore how the Old Testament prepares for, prefigures, and ultimately finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. We will begin by examining Christophanies—those passages where the Son of God appears in the Old Testament before His incarnation. Scripture speaks of a mysterious figure who is sent by God, speaks as God, receives worship, and exercises divine authority. Understanding these passages helps us see that Christ’s work did not begin in Matthew, but stretches back into the earliest chapters of redemptive history.

We will also spend time studying typology, learning how Old Covenant persons, institutions, and events function as God-designed patterns that find their true and final meaning in Christ. Figures like Adam, Moses, and David; structures like the tabernacle and temple; and practices such as sacrifice and priesthood all point beyond themselves. They are not merely historical artifacts, but theological signposts that lead us to Jesus as the true and better fulfillment of God’s promises.

Finally, we will emphasize Christ-centered reading—the conviction that every part of Scripture ultimately serves God’s purpose of revealing His Son. This does not mean forcing Christ into passages where He does not belong, but learning to read the Bible the way the apostles did: as a unified story moving steadily toward the reign of Christ and the establishment of His kingdom.

This class will be exegetical but accessible, theological but practical. It is intended to strengthen your confidence in Scripture, sharpen your Bible-reading skills, and deepen your appreciation for the wisdom and coherence of God’s Word. Whether you are new to studying the Bible or have been reading it for years, this series will help you see familiar passages with fresh clarity.

We hope you will join us as we begin this study together.
